Dear Programmer,
Enclosed is a copy of the latest issue of the PsL News, which contains
a write-up of your program if it was just added to the library.
If you requested information about using the shareware approach or
submitting software to PsL, please read the files on this disk.
If you sent us a program and it was not added, it was probably for one
of the following reasons:
1. We already have too many similar programs and did not see it to be a
significant improvement over them. Check the listing or better yet,
the PsL PD/Shareware Reviews disks. If you see a lot of similar
programs, but think that yours is better, please let us know.
2. The program is time- or usage-limited or has major features crippled
or is otherwise limited. The PsL policy is to not carry "shareware"
which has been limited in the number of times or length of time it can
be used. In our opinion, such limitations work against the major
benefit of shareware -- the long-term passing around of programs from
user to user. Our policy also is to not carry programs which have had
major features crippled, for much the same reason.
3. The program has major bugs or, in our opinion, does not measure up
to current programming standards, such as the use of colors, fast
screen writings, default prompts, full-screen data entry/editing, etc.
See the programming section of the listing in PsL News for tools for
your favorite language.
Most of the programs in PsL are sent to the PsL directly by the author.
The others come from CompuServe and other major BBS's. When a program
does not come directly from the author, we check the docs to make sure
that we meet all conditions for legally copying the program before we
write it up and add it to the library.
If we have overlooked anything in adding or writing up your program,
please let us know as soon as possible. Each month, we add the write-
ups from the PsL News to the PD/Shareware Reviews Disks by category.
If you would like to submit a more extensive write-up for us to use in
the Reviews disk than we had room to put in the News, please send it on
disk. Please restrict write-ups to discussions of significant features
and not just hype. We still reserve the right to edit such material.
Please remember that in the PsL News, our primary purpose is to select
the best programs and then to provide the reader with enough information
about them to enable him to decide whether or not he should try the
program. It is not our place to do a full-blown review like you might
find in PC Magazine, and which often reflects the personal bias of the
reviewer, because the whole point of shareware is that the user can try
the program and decide for himself.
SHAREWARE REGISTRATION SERVICE:
The PsL provides a service for users and programmers by allowing users
to call our 800 number and use their credit cards to register the
programs. Unlike other distributors that take as much as 60% of the
registration price for such a service, the PsL charges the programmer
only a $5 order processing fee plus 4% of the total price (including
S&H) to cover the costs of processing charges. See the file
REGISTER.AGR on the "Submissions" disk for more information.
If your program is free or has a registration fee of $10 or less, then
this offer does not make sense for you, so please just ignore it.
Also please note that if you do not wish to use the PsL's registration
service, PsL will still carry the shareware version of your program.
Selling registered versions is just an EXTRA service we provide.
PSL'S FREE DISK OFFER:
The PsL offers a free disk (subject to Terms and Conditions) to users
whenever they register a program. If a user sends you one of these
coupons to sign, please send it back to the USER, not to the PsL. If
the user registers through the PsL, he does not have to get you to sign
the form; the free disk credit is automatic.
ASSOCIATION OF SHAREWARE PROFESSIONALS
ASP is a trade association which includes virtually all of the top
shareware programmers and as associate members, shareware distributors.
You can get a membership application form on many of the Forums on
CompuServe, where ASP meets, or by writing ASP P.O.Box 5786, Bellevue,
WA 98006.
PsL is an approved vendor and associate member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals and as such, PsL provides the following
disclosure:
"ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you.
If you are unable to resolve a shareware related problem with an ASP
member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help.
The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an
ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members'
products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at P.O.Box 5786,
Bellevue, WA 98006 or send a CompuServe message via Easyplex to ASP
Ombudsman 70007,3536."
Regards,
Nelson Ford
PS: A few programmers receiving this package called to ask what they
are supposed to do with the disk and mailer. You do NOT have to send
the disk back to us. We provided the self-addressed mailer in case you
do want to send us an update or new program or better description for
the Reviews disks. If you have nothing to send at this time, you can
save it until you do, or just toss it all out.
PPS: If you have received this disk before, be sure to check the file
dates for files that have been modified recently. These files may have
new information in them.
